How To Update Google Chrome to the Latest Version

Google Chrome is set to automatically update when you restart it. But if you leave it open for days, you miss out on groovy new features. Here’s how to manually update it.
</span>
The Google Chrome browser is set to automatically update itself to the latest version – if you restart it, that is. Most people probably close out of it and relaunch it every day or few days. However, there are some (including me) who leave it open for days or even weeks with 50 tabs open, and we miss the updates.
I realized this was the case yesterday when I read about Google’s new “conversational search” feature. You can only use it with the latest version of Chrome.
Update Google Chrome – Option 1
1. To manually update to the latest version click the Options > Help > About Google Chrome.
2. There you’ll see the current version you’re running and that an update is available. Click Relaunch, and you’ll be running the latest version in no time.
Update Google Chrome – Option 2
1. A quick shortcut to the above process is to just type: chrome://chrome/ into the URL address bar.
2. This will take you to the Chrome, About page. If an update is needed, just click Relaunch.
If you like to stay on tops of things and make sure your software is up-to-date as soon as possible. This is a great way to make sure you have the latest security patches and new features for Chrome. You have the control to make sure you have “the latest and greatest” instead of waiting on the browser to choose when you receive updates. Thanks to Dan in our comments section for this second option!

if Chrome says “Updates are disabled by the administrator”. This is caused by an error in your registry, and can be quickly fixed. 1.Press ⊞ Win+R and type regedit. 2.Use the folder tree on the left to navigate to: 3.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesGoogleUpdate 4.Double-click the “Update Default” item. 5.Change the “Value data” field to “1” and press OK. 6.Restart Google Chrome

Page is waaaay to busy to follow, making any constructive effort on your part, at least in my opinion, worthless. Sorry. You have come upon an honest man. They are no longer produced for the past two generations.
I would, honestly, like to know, in a way someone from my generation would understand….which people under 50 CANNOT SEEM TO COMPREHEND….how to MANUALLY update google chrome in my Windows XP computer.
Remember: KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID. That is KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID. KISS
Thank you.

Making it as simple as possible (I’m over 60, BTW), you cannot update Chrome on a Windows XP computer. As of November 2015, Google is no longer supporting or providing Chrome updates, for the XP, Vista, and MAC OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8 operating systems as these system have reached EOF (tech speak for End Of Life). Perhaps you should consider a modern O/S as companies stopping support for obsolete systems will only continue to grow.

I know they no longer support Vista, so I am pretty sure that they no longer support XP either.

One your mobile, you should just use the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. More than likely, your mobile is probably set to auto-update.

Windows 7 computer system, I’ve hit relaunch numerous times, still won’t update. I’m worried if I Uninstall the Google Chrome and reinstall it, that it will not be compatible? Any suggestions as what to do?

What version are you on? Might be you’re on the latest build. Last resort – sure, just uninstall and add it again. The download from Google should be the latest build.

What OS are you running? Mac or Windows?
Either way – you can always start with Malwarebytes – https://www.groovypost.com/out/malwarebytes/
You can click “Home” at the top and grab a home version for free.
Let me know.

Lately Chrome does not keep up with my typing – i.e., somehow, the cursor loses focus in the window I’m typing in and half of what I just typed was for naught!?! Anyone else experiencing this symptom?
And thanks for your recognition for my previous reply – not necessary but certainly appreciated!

This wikiHow teaches you how to update the Google Chrome browser on your computer and mobile devices. While Google Chrome updates typically install themselves, you can manually trigger an update on a mobile device by using your mobile device’s app store, or on a computer by visiting the «About Google Chrome» page.
On Desktop (Windows or Mac)</h3>
-
1Open Google Chrome. This app is a green, red, yellow, and blue circle.
-
2Click ⋮. It’s in the top-right corner of Chrome’s window. Doing so will invoke a drop-down menu.
- This icon will be green, yellow, or red if an update is available.[1]
- On older versions of Chrome, this icon will resemble ☰ instead.
-
3Select Help. It’s near the bottom of the drop-down menu. Selecting Help will prompt a pop-out window.
- If you see an Update Google Chrome option near the top of this menu, click it instead.
-
4Click About Google Chrome. This option is at the top of the pop-out window.
-
5Wait for Google Chrome to update. The update process should only take a couple of minutes at most.
- If you see a message here that says «Google Chrome is up to date», your browser doesn’t need to update right now.
-
6Restart Google Chrome. You can do so by clicking the Relaunch button that appears after Chrome finishes updating, or you can simply close and reopen Chrome. Your browser should now be up to date.
- You can check the status of your Chrome browser by revisiting the «About Google Chrome» page and looking for the «Google Chrome is up to date» message on the left side of the page.

QuestionHow will I be able to update Google Chrome when Windows Vista is no longer supported? You will not be able to update it on Vista or older. But there is a way! Go to any other computer that has Windows 7 or higher and download it (you should get a file named «ChromeSetup.exe»). Get that file to the computer with Vista (USB stick or any other way). Run it on the Vista system and it should work. I installed it on XP using this method.
-
QuestionIf I download Google Chrome on my Android tablet, do I delete the original browser? No, your original browser will still be available. As long as you have enough storage space on your device, you can download as many apps as you wish, without anything being deleted or overwritten.
-
QuestionWhat do I do if Chrome will not update on my computer?Restart your computer. Go to chrome.google.com. Download the installer (you should get a file named «ChromeSetup.exe). Uninstall chrome. QuestionApple tells me my Mac is obsolete and cannot update Chrome. What is the harm in not updating Chrome? The risk of not updating Chrome is roughly the same risk as operating an obsolete Mac: your browsing is more vulnerable to malware, intruders, and other unwanted attacks. If possible, update your Mac to the latest operating system. If this is not possible, you’ll need to upgrade to a newer Mac before you can update Chrome.

Google Chrome is a free download, so you don’t have to pay to keep it up to date. In this article, I will explain how to update Chrome so that you always have the latest version.
Note: I have used screenshots from a MacBook. However, the steps remain the same for Windows 10 and other computers too.
Step 1 – Open Google Chrome
Open Google Chrome. If you are on Windows, open it from your desktop. If you are using macOS, launch it from the launcher or your dock.
Step 2 – Go to Settings
Click the three dots on the top right corner. This is the Settings icon.
Step 3 – Click “Help”
Step 4 – Click “About Chrome”
Step 5 – Let Chrome Download The Update
Step 6 – Click “Relaunch”
After Google Chrome completes downloading the update, it will install the update. The next step is to restart Chrome. You will see “Relaunch” on the screen. Click Relaunch.
Chrome will restart and show the latest version number. If it is up to date, you will see the following screen:
How to Update Chrome Manually
It is simple. Download the offline installer for Chrome and run the .exe file. Follow the prompts, and you are done!
How to Switch to Beta Version
New features show up on the beta channel before they are made available to the general public. To test these new features, you can update Chrome to beta.
Download the beta version from here and install it. Your Google Chrome will be updated to the beta channel.
How to Turn Off Auto Update
It is recommended that you keep the auto-update on. It is important that the browser and all the extensions and plugins you use to stay up to date to avoid any security issues.
Just in case. You can do this, but NOT recommended at all. Here is a short article with instructions.
Update Chrome Extensions Manually
Google Chrome updates extensions also automatically. However, you can always update them manually as explained here.
- Open your extensions page, by clicking on Menu > Extensions or, type chrome://extensions/ in address bar.
- On the right-hand side, click on “Developer Mode”
- Now, Click on “Update Extensions Now”
- Done!
How to Update Google Chrome Portable
The easiest and straightforward way to upgrade the portable version of Google Chrome is to download the latest version of the app and delete the older one you have.
Google Chrome Update History
There is no way to find update history from within Google Chrome. However, Google has a blog that they update each time there is an update in the Stable, Beta or Dev channels.
Entries on this blog provide details about major changes in the new version and also a link to all the bugs fixed in the version.
You can read about all the previous Google Chrome updates here on the Chrome Releases Blog. You can find the last update to Chrome on the home page of the blog.
Here is another good resource that you can use to see recent updates to Google Chrome across all the platforms. This is supported by the Chromium team.
